Business class is where points are worth the most: a seat that costs tens of thousands of kroner in cash can cost the same points as a couple of economy trips. The catch is availability. Airlines release only a few award seats per flight.
What it costs, one way
| Programme | Long-haul business, one way | Fees |
|---|---|---|
| SAS EuroBonus | 60,000 points (SAS flights) | No fuel surcharge; taxes about €6–100 by route |
| Finnair Plus | 72,500 Avios to North America and most of Asia via Helsinki | €110 surcharge, €130 to Japan |
| Flying Blue | From 60,000 miles to North America, dynamic | Taxes extra; often 45,000 on Promo Rewards |
Finnair prices each flight on its own chart from Helsinki, so the short hop from Copenhagen, Oslo or Stockholm adds 10,000 Avios and €10. SAS uses a fixed chart for its own flights. Flying Blue prices change daily, so treat its number as a floor, not a promise.
What a point is worth
- SAS EuroBonus: we use 1.2 US cents a point (Low end of published valuations (1.2–2.0 US cents), October 2026).
- Finnair Plus: we use 1.4 US cents a point (The Points Guy valuation of Avios, October 2026).
- Flying Blue: we use 1.4 US cents a point (The Points Guy valuation of Flying Blue miles, October 2026).
If the cash fare divided by the points is well above that value, the award is a good use of points. Our business class comparison does this sum per route with the cash price from Google Flights.
Finding a free seat
- Search one way: award seats are priced per direction, and the best outbound and return days rarely line up.
- Be flexible by a few days: the award calendar shows every day with a free seat in the next 60 days.
- Seats are often released far ahead or close to departure. An award alert tells you when one opens.
- Check the seat on the airline before you transfer or buy points: seats come and go during the day.
Questions
How many EuroBonus points does business class to the US cost?
60,000 points one way on SAS-operated flights, plus low taxes.
Can I fly Finnair business from Copenhagen with Avios?
Yes, via Helsinki. The Copenhagen–Helsinki flight is priced separately, adding 10,000 Avios and €10 to the long-haul price.
Why does Flying Blue show "from" prices?
Flying Blue uses dynamic pricing, so the miles needed change with demand. The saver level to North America starts at 60,000 one way.
